oe and Sue King had their hearts set on a
charming bungalow, so when their real estate
agent pulled up to a 1950s ranch in Arlington,
0
Virginia, “we didn’t want to get out of the car,”
W
Joe says. Fortunately, they did and discovered
the feature that sold them: an enclosed stairway to an
unfinished attic.
The couple moved in and, after the birth of their
second daughter, decided the time was right both to
expand their living space and create the effect of a bunga-
low by adding a shed dormer and a wide, deep porch.
Classic details are used throughout the house, from the
salvaged oak door to reclaimed heart pine floors.
Now, the Kings have the space they need—three
bedrooms, two baths, and a playroom upstairs—in a
house with all the character they’d been hoping for. “The
greatest compliment is when someone asks if it’s original
to the neighborhood,” says Sue.
TOP BILLING With careful planning and a
considerate crew, the Kings stayed in their house
during reconstruction, which involved tearing off
part of the roof to make way for the dormer
addition. All new windows, a carriage-house-
style garage door, and a paint job complete
the transformation.
